Harbinger of Hope: A Quest… or not?

Throughout our life we are on a constant quest – a quest for a “harbinger of hope. It comes in different forms at different stages of life – but we are on that quest – almost always.

Quest of anything denies us the ability to live fully in the present moment, for our subconscious is always on look-out for answers. It stops us from just being. But at the same time as humans we just can’t abandon the desire for finding our harbinger of hope. It is an innate need of this mortal form.

There seem to be forces of opposing nature that are in play here – on one hand we are on that quest because we want to live fully, and on the other hand just the quest itself is pulling us away from being able to live fully. Does that make the quest for harbinger of hope a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I have been mulling over this for quite some time now. I have off late come to the realization that our harbinger of hope is “us”. Everything around us will eventually change at some point and most of the times it will be beyond our control – and hence our harbinger of hope can’t be outside us. This is not to say that different experiences in life are not valuable – albeit, they are! For they are what defines life! On the contrary this realization that our harbinger of hope is not outside, will, if not anything else empower us to live fully through all the experiences that life has to offer.

Realization that we are our own harbinger of hope doesn’t in any way undermine the relationships we have in life. It on the contrary refines the core of our relationships with just love and respect as it reduces the implicit “dependency” dimension in those relationships. It is as Dalai Lama has said, “Best relationships are those in which your love for each other exceeds the need for each other”.

The realization that “I am my harbinger of hope” is a powerful one – the key is to be able to stay with it. How long can I stay with it? Only time will tell. But as life happens, I hope to be able to come back to this realization time and again.
